History Of The United Anglo Caribbean Society

The Ealing based organisation was formed In October 1971. 'United' because it is an amalgamation of two organisations; 'Anglo Caribbean' because its membership Is comprised principally of people of Caribbean origin or descent who now reside permanently in the UK as British Citizens.

The UACS is a Registered Charity and it is run strictly in accordance with the rules and guidelines that this status requires. Its finances are independently audited annually. It works in partnership with other statutory and voluntary bodies, particularly in the 'areas of health, the elderly and the young.

It runs a luncheon club for Caribbean elderly in permanent premises in Acton, four days a week Tues-Fri, and serves about 5,000 meals a year. This provides not only a healthy balance daily meal but also acts as a social centre for its users.

In collaboration with Central & Cecil HA, and with Supporting People Funding from the London Boroughs of Ealing. The UACS runs a small hostel in Southall for homeless youth, which is supervised by a full-time Manager and a part-time Support worker whose task is to help them to live independently and to maintain their tenancy m; they move-on into permanent accommodation.

It is being encouraged to extend this work into larger premises, to help us achieve this we have employed a Services Manager in November 2007. We also operate a Housing Advice scheme for single homeless people, and provide Floating Support on a temporary basis for people over 50 years old.

The Society also raises its own funds through sponsored walks, a Caribbean food stall annually at the Hanwell Carnival, an annual dinner and dance, etc.

Some uses of these funds include a popular annual one-day conference on social or health issues affecting the Black community, and providing a one-week holiday by the sea for about 10 elderly people. A long-term aim is to raise enough funds to provide a permanent culturol and active centre in the borough.

Apart from the task of the paid workers for the projects, the management and other work of the Society is carried out by its members on voluntary basis.
