Introduction to the projects
Black Elderly Lunch Club
The Black Elderly Project luncheon club was set up in 1985 and provides a hot and balanced lunch as well as encouraging socialisation for the African/Caribbean elders in the Ealing Borough and its environs. The luncheon club is a place where African/Caribbean elders can meet and reminisce on past events. We also have a thriving dominoes club who take part in tournaments, both at home and away, visiting other clubs within England. We also arrange trips/outings throughout the year, visiting places of interest too, also for short holidays both in the U.K. and abroad.
George Doyley House
Comprises of a six-bed shared accommodation for homeless African/Caribbean men and women aged 18-25 years old with low support needs. The House was opened in 1993 and derives its name in honor of Mr George Doyley, a founding member of the United Anglo Caribbean Society whose work was extremely innovative with action not words in the establishment of the Project. The Project provides good quality affordable homes and continues to make a difference to the lives of many young people.
Floating Support Scheme for older People
This scheme was set up specifically to provide support services to older people from the African/Caribbean and other Minority Ethnic Communities while living in self contained accommodation (e.g., local authority, housing association, private rented and owner-occupied). This service unfortunately is currently being carried out only on a voluntary basis through lack of funding.
Young people Housing Advice and Resettlement Scheme
This scheme was set up in 2003 to help single homeless people in the Borough of Ealing. The aim of the scheme is to assist homeless people of all ages especially those from Black & Minority Ethnic Communities, people fleeing domestic violence, refugees/Asylum seekers, Care leavers, ex-offenders or being evicted or threatened with eviction. This scheme has now been extended to four other Boroughs Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow as result of new funding from London Boroughs Councils.
UACS Research Programme
The United Anglo Caribbean Society is currently undertaking research into the Health and Social Care needs of Older People of African, Caribbean and Somali decent.
This research is being done in collaboration with The Royal Holloway University which has been commissioned to oversee the programme. We also intend to recruit community researchers from the ethnic groups stated above, to conduct the research.
